Coffee: Strong Brew Edition (August 15, 2012)

“Coffee: Strong Brew Edition” is SJ’s first full length commercial studio recorded LP, featuring award-winning and radio charting songs from his EP entitled “Coffee” and 7 additional tracks. “Strong Brew” also features musical performances by various South Florida artists, blending a spectrum of acoustic string arrangements, SJ’s raspy vocals, and carefully-placed harmonies on top of a Miami-type percussive pulse that elevates the folk/singer-songwriter songs into an acoustic rock and light pop presence. “Strong Brew” was produced by SJ, Oszy Carmona and Peter Finley, mixed by Grammy Award-Winner Bob Rosa, and mastered by Ryan Smith of Sterling Sound. It was recorded at Outer Reach Music Studios in Miami, Florida. “I Like You” was produced by SJ and Derek Olds, and mixed and mastered by Grammy Award-Winner Carlos Alvarez.

Lyrics

I LIKE YOU (RADIO VERSION)

I like the way you look at me every time, you first come into my mind
I like the way you fit perfectly, on my side
I like the way you hold my hand, and bury your head in my chest
Every time you’re tired, every time you want to rest
I like the way your face looks when you sleep, I like your legs crossed over me
I like the way you always want me to win, I like how you touch my skin

I like you . . . you . . . oh I like you . . . how else do I tell you

I like the way you always ask for another song, and how we always get along
I like how you dress for me, I wish you could see what I see
I like how you’re slow to get into the pool, oh how I like to hold you when you do
I like the way you smile at me, I wish the whole world could see

I like you . . . you . . . oh I like you . . . how else can I tell you

I like you . . . you . . . oh I like you . . . how else do I tell you
I like you . . . you . . . oh I like you . . . how else do I tell you

I like when you walk into a room, I like how people look at you
I like you in your ski clothes and warm hat, I like how you talk in your accent
I like how you dance with me, I like how you like family
I like how you inspire me, I like you so much can’t you see
Can’t you see . . . can’t you see . . . can’t you see
I like you . . . can’t you see . . . can’t you see

I AM (feat. Joshua Stedman, Randy Singer)

I am sitting around wonder why wonder why it is that I can swim but I can’t fly
I am counting pennies duckin’ calls staring at walls stripped down naked soul socks and a bow
I am calling foes missing friends watching lives end trying to find where the new lines begin
I am crossing fingers flipping cards wondering why wondering why truth itself is the best lie

I am paying to lose, I’m paying to win, I’m paying with their fake prayers, but mostly my so-called sins
I pay them so they don’t, I pay them so they do
And for just a little more I can’t stay deaf, dumb, blind, lost and confused

I am falling down forgetting to sleep I lose my head at least five days a week
I am chasing away wolves and woes and girls who knows, caught the ball forgot how to throw
I am finding rhythm melody and notes I wonder why wonder why heavy never floats
I am fixin’ scores clearing drawers settling wars ‘cause tomorrow I won’t be here anymore

I am paying to choose, I’m paying to breathe, I am paying with magic tokens and one teaspoon of magic beads
I pay them so they don’t, I pay them so they do
And for just a little more I can stay deaf, dump, blind, lost and confused

Well, I am paying to lose, I’m paying to win, I’m paying with their fake prayers, but mostly my so-called sins
I pay them so they don’t, I pay them so they don’t
And for just a little more I can’t stay deaf, dumb, blind, lost and confused

I am sitting around wonder why wonder why it is that I can swim but I can’t fly
I am counting pennies ducking calls staring at walls stripped down naked soul socks and a bow
Hmmm, yeah, yeah, yeah I am finding rhythm melody and notes wondering why wondering why heavy never floats
I am fixin’ scores clearing drawers settling wars ‘cause tomorrow I won’t be here anymore
I am I am I am I, I am I am I am I, I am I am I am I, I am

COFFEE (feat. Cat Shell)

Cold fingers walking on sheets of ice, perfect strangers all left to their own devices
Just trying to making it through
Heavy coats in a smoke-filled room, dark wood floors where colors of spring slip through the grooves
Just trying to make it through
Eyes barely open running down the field, catching bullets with teeth while the girls do cartwheels
Just trying to make it through

Wait, wait, there’s still time, to trade this coffee for fresh eyes
If we get lost, we can try, to paint a map and hang it, on the sky

Noisy whispers make good kindle for the air, muddy shoes track thoughts that once were quite clear
Trying to make it through
Sleepy mornings find life afternoon, mid-day poetry gives way to bright lights and cheap motel rooms
Trying to make it through
Scratchy voices tell fairytales to walls, guitar strings echo passing notes down the hall
Trying to make it through

Wait, wait, there’s still time, to trade this coffee for fresh eyes
If we get lost, we can try, to paint a map and hang it, on the sky

Sad endings meet happy streets, joy and sorrow come to give one another some reprieve
Just trying to make it through
Hopes and dreams held high in the air, with fate and destiny tucked away under a big red chair
Just trying to make it through
Soft hellos waive to hard goodbyes, a grass that’s greener for as long as time stays on the side
And never makes it through

Wait, wait, there’s still time, to trade this coffee for fresh eyes
If we get lost, we can try, to paint a map and hang it, on the sky

THAT IS ALL

The world’s on fire, you better drop and roll
Take off your shoes, and those dirty clothes
Cry enough to laugh, spend all your dimes
Trade away your gold, it don’t mean a thing

And that is all, I can say

It’s the same old wars, with the same old songs
And the same ill fortunes, stealing our souls
Drink your sour sweet, take your bitter warm
Make your mess neat, and have your chaos calm

And that is all, I can say to you
That is all, I can say to you
That is all, I think I’m gonna to say

So the world’s on fire, check your bags and go
Get drunk and laugh, until your lost and cold
And to warm your feet, to warm your toes
Try to find sincerity, among all these bones

And that is all, I can say to you
That is all, I can say to you
Yeah and that is all, I think I’m gonna to say

Your innocence is too late, your innocence is too late
Your innocence is too late, your innocence is too late
Your innocence is too, your innocence is too
Your innocence is, too late, your innocence is too late

LET ME BE

Sometimes we make it big, sometimes small
I often find we’re just caught with our backs against the wall
You follow me around, pushing your luck
When I finally turn around you’re gone, and I’m stuck

Yeah it’s all around you, even thought you can’t see, and I tried my best to, give you what you needed
And though I’m glad I found you, I’m sad you lost me, sorry I say it so candidly but please just, let me be

So many days and nights, just filling space
When everything but me, seems to have its own place
You tell me you want it all, and then some more
When I try to give it you’re gone, walk out the door

Yeah it’s all around you, even thought you can’t see, and I tried my best to, give you what you needed
And though I’m glad I found you, I’m sad you lost me, sorry I say it so candidly but please just, let me be

I gotta stop this train, it’s running off its tracks
I can’t turn around no no I can’t look back
You’re driving me insane, and you cut me no slack
Is it too much to ask, I just want my life back?

Yeah it’s all around you even though you can’t see, and I tried my best to, give you what you needed
And though I’m glad I found you, I’m sad you lost me, sorry I say it so candidly but please just
Please ju-oh,
Please just, let me be

BREATHE

Used to run across the sun, used to think that I was the one
I was still chasing the wind, back to home and back again
I used to watch you play, I used to think that I could stay
I was thinking I was in, but life is not just what you win

It’s a, long way down, it’s, quite far down, it’s a long way to the ground, if you don’t breathe

Used to laugh at the rain, I used to think that I was sane
Rode the bus all way through town, thought I’d see what’s going around
Picking shapes out of the sky, wondering why the hell why
Listening to them say, there will always be another day

It’s a, long way down, it’s, quite far down, you won’t see the ground, if you don’t breathe

I used to be fine with away, but love’s got too many shades of gray
I was thinking I had you, but you can’t tell life what to do

It’s a, long way down, it’s, quite far down, you can’t see the ground, if you don’t breathe
It’s a, long way down, it’s, quite far down, you can’t see the ground, if you don’t breathe
If you don’t breathe, if you don’t breathe, if you don’t breathe

IT’S NOT ME

Ooh, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-eeh
Yeah, da da dat, hmm

Freeze, yeah it’s coming at you a little bit faster than it seems, if only I could figure out what it all means
Then we could sip our little potion and we can just be, happy in our illusion that we are free

But oh, I know, oh, I know, yeah, oh oh, I know, it’s not me

Breathe, before they suck all the air out of the atmosphere, and we all forget why it is that we are here
Just fishing for a pond where we can play, splashing words around to cover up the haze

But oh, I know, oh oh, I know, yeah, oh oh, I know, it’s not me

Write, your own song, before it’s too late, and it’s gone
Sing, yourself on, oh and I might, follow you along so

Hide, before it’s too late and they get inside your mind, I can help find a place where you will be fine
Sit back and watch it all go down from the outside, save yourself for the day you have to try

But oh, I know, oh oh, I know, yeah, oh oh, I know, it’s not me
Oh oh oh, I know, oh oh oh, I know, yeah yeah yeah oh oh oh, I know, it’s not me
It’s not me

ALMOST GOOD ENOUGH

Want to tell you what I am all about, spend the night with you shut the whole world out
Carve a corner of the universe for us, some sand a few trees would be enough
Wish you would just tell me your name

Want to hear why you talk to yourself, cover your eyes and tell me why you make me melt
Hold you close and just listen to the rain, we agree that everyone’s insane
Wish we could just skip ahead to that day

And all this time, blinded by my own disguise, I couldn’t see ahead far enough
Yeah those elephants make it tough
But I can say, today’s a brand new day and, I think it won’t be that rough, better than almost good enough

Want to sit with you underneath the sun, kiss the air with our words and write a song
Clear our heads so all we have to do is play, watch the day just waste itself away
Wish we could just skip ahead to that state

Want to hope that everything will be alright, when I tell you about all I got inside
Just a few years might take some time, but every moment you will be on my mind
Wish we could just skip ahead to that day

And all this time, blinded by my own disguise, I couldn’t see ahead far enough
Yeah I was just making it up
But I can say, today’s a brand new day and, I think it won’t be that rough, better than almost good
Yes I can say, today’s a brand new day and, I think it won’t be that rough, better than almost good enough

OH CAPTAIN (feat. Erica Sommer)

Oh captain, I’m ready to fight, grabbed my sword with all of my might
Oh great king, I’m ready to kill, got my armor on, they say it’s worth the thrill

‘Cause I can’t seem to tell, if this heaven’s any different from hell
Ignorance, yes it’s free, one pill for you, one for them, one for me

Oh captain, I’m here to stay, I put my nights on hold, to give you my days
Oh sweet queen, I’m ready to die, I gave all that I am, just to be at your side

‘Cause I can’t seem to tell, if this heaven’s any different from hell
Ignorance, yeah it’s free, one dose for you, one for them, one for me

Well I could run, run, run, as fast as I can
Either way I’m sure I’ll find my head buried in the sand, dealing with the man

‘Cause I can’t seem to tell, if this heaven’s any different from hell
Ignorance, yeah it’s free, and there’s enough for you and for them and for me
Enough for you, and for them and for me, yeah there’s enough for you, for them, for me
There’s enough for you and for them, and for me

FRESH SOUL (feat. Randy Singer)

It’s time to go, I’m thinking outer space
I can’t stand this cold, and the sun is staining my face
We reap what we sew, and I’ve had plenty of cake
But yeah what you don’t know, is that it fell on the floor and I ate it anyway
Oh anyway, hmm, hmm

I need a fresh light and day, night and friends, foes, eyes, scars, laughs and woes
I need a fresh pace, taste, love and hate, sky, wind, sun, and rain
I need fresh soul, I need fresh soul

So I packed my bags, cancelled three dates
The one was a drag, but the other two what a shame
I’m flying kind of low, and they can see the cracks on my face
Saying adios, ‘cause it’s the last time they’ll see me this way
See me this way, huh, uh, oh

I need a fresh light and day, night and friends, foes, eyes, scars, laughs and woes
I need a fresh pace, taste, love and hate, sun, wind, sky and rain
I need fresh soul, I need fresh soul

So it’s time to go, I’m thinking I’ll tempt fate
Find a singer’s soul, and a pretty face to contemplate
I don’t know what’s in store, but everything else can wait
Yeah well here I go, I only hope I’m not too late
I hope I’m not too late, huh, uh, oh

I need a fresh light and day, night, friends and foes, eyes, scars, laughs and woes
I need a fresh pace, taste, love and hate, sun, wind, sky and rain
I need fresh soul, running straight through my bones
I need fresh soul, can you tell me where to go

GO YOUR WAY (Bonus Track)

You go your way, you go your way
I will stay, yes I will stay
But you, go your way

When blue lights your day, when blue lights your day
I, oh I will stay, I, oh I will stay
And you go your way

You go your way, when blue lights your day
I, oh I will stay, I, oh I will stay
And you go your way
Yes you, go your way

TONIGHT YOU ARE PERFECT (Acoustic) (feat. Ruti Machnai)

I’ve got my dreams worked out, there’s nothing more I would do to change you now
Dancing in the rain, I wonder if I’d ever see you like this again
Tonight you are perfect

And you may just be, the missing piece, of a puzzle that I can’t complete
Tonight you are perfect

And it frustrates me, I can never get you close enough to be close enough to me
No I won’t leave you wondering, if the words I say I mean, well I do, I do, I do
Tonight you are perfect

And you may just be, the missing piece, of a puzzle that I can’t complete
Tonight you are perfect

It’s so extraordinary, how you must have read my mind
I saw your face already, and pictured it a million times
I just wanted you to know, you’re better in real life

I’ve got my dreams worked out, there’s nothing more I would do to change, you now
Tonight you are perfect

And you may just be, the missing piece, of a puzzle that I can’t complete
Tonight you are perfect, to me

IN MY PLAN

Hey Little Miss Sunshine I hear ya comin’ home soon
You know I like your style, you know I like your moods
Could be on to something great and it could happen real soon
I can’t say your timing’s great but I’d love to see you, aw yeah
I’d love to see you

Hey Little Miss Sunshine it’s been far too long
Been spinnin’ my wheels since the day you were gone
Drivin’ ‘round in circles wonderin’ what I should do
I guess the world’s just not the same without you, without
It’s not the same without you

Hey Little Miss Sunshine, take my hand
The grass is kind of wet, we can sit here in the sand
Tell me about your life so I can understand
Maybe you’ll stay this time, it’s kind of in my plan
It’s kind of in my, it’s kind of in my plan
It’s kind of in my plan, it’s kind of in my plan

Hey Little Miss Sunshine I see you made it home now
I try to reach you but can’t figure out how
So I’ll be hear waitin’ keepin’ champagne cool
Call me when it’s over we got so much to do, aw yeah
We got so much to do

Hey Little Miss Sunshine, take my hand
The grass is kind of wet, we can sit here in the sand
Tell me about your life so I can understand
Maybe you’ll stay this time, it’s kind of in my plan
Hey Little Miss Sunshine, take my hand
The grass is kind of wet, we can sit here in the sand
Tell me about your life so I can understand
Maybe you’ll stay this time, it’s kind of in my plan
It’s kind of in my, it’s kind of in my plan
It’s kind of in my plan, it’s kind of in my plan

IT’S ALRIGHT

Woke up about noon on a Saturday
Just in time to see you take that flight away
Something about you’re going to travel the world to grow
I nod my head and say softly I know
So off you go don’t you forget to write
Maybe you’ll let me know sometime you made it alright

These streets the buildings the sky the people here are gray
I’m trying to find something nice about it all
A thousand thoughts about what I could say
But I’m not so good at making sense of all this I must say
Saw an old man with a smile on his face
He said don’t worry boy it comes around at least twice anyway

It’s alright it’s ok ten thousand miles ain’t that far away
It’s alright it’s ok nothing tequila can’t take away
It’s alright it’s ok but I’d rather be there with you than …

Came back around to it on a Sunday
You can only think so much anyway
Something about time I forgot what they say
Now it’s gone and it seems like just yesterday
So here I go in a song to finally say
I hope you made it alright and you’re smiling today

It’s alright it’s ok ten thousand miles ain’t that far away
It’s alright it’s ok nothing tequila can’t take away
It’s alright it’s ok but I’d rather be there with you than stay
It’s alright it’s ok but I’d rather be there with you than

UNTIL THE END OF TIME

The way the moon begins
The way the sun sneaks in
The way the water falls
The way the wind it crawls
The way you fall asleep
The way you find a dream
The way you touch the air
The way you sit and stair

And I want you to smile at me when I pass you by
Eyes bright wide and looking up at the sky
Wait for something new about which to wonder why
And tell you I love you until the end of time

The way the night speaks
The way the day greets
The way the trees blow
The way I know
The way you lose touch
The way you think so much
The way you see me
The way I see

And I want you to smile at me when I pass you by
Eyes bright wide and looking up at the sky
Wait for something new about which to wonder why
And tell you I love you until the end of time

Until the end of time
Until the end of time
Until the end of time
